This book by John Foxe (1517 - 1587) is beyond doubt
one of the great Christian classics in English (or any other language, for
that matter). We have some frightfully explicit old illustrations we would
like to put on the web with the text, but it would slow it down so much as
to greatly reduce it's usefulness to most students. Perhaps sometime in the
future we can scan some of these, and put them up on the web separately, so
that those who have a need for them, or the equipment to use them, can
download them separately if they desire. ---(Editor-Webmaster).
Except for the Bible itself, no book so profoundly influenced early
Christian sentiment as the Book of Martyrs. Even in our own time it is still
a living force. It is far more than just a record of persecution. It is an
arsenal of controversy, a storehouse of romance, as well as a source of
edification.
And we in this "modern, 'enlightened?' time" should also remember
constantly that about 464 Martyrs are dying daily (on average) RIGHT NOW!
AND MANY THOUSANDS MORE ARE UNDERGOING SEVERE PERSECUTIONS AND TORTURE
FOR THEIR FAITH WHILE YOU READ THIS EDITORIAL NOTE FROM THE WEBMASTER!
